As the organization continues to grow and expand their impact across a six-county territory, Habitat KC is seeking an experienced, strategic, and relationship-driven Vice President of People & Culture to help shape the future of the organization by building an engaged, high-performing and mission-aligned team.

 

Position Summary

Reporting directly to the CEO, the Vice President of People & Culture will serve as a key member of the leadership team and trusted advisor across all departments - Homeowner Services, Construction, Community Engagement, ReStore, and Finance. This individual will lead the development and implementation of comprehensive human resource strategies that foster a culture of collaboration, inclusion, and excellence.

 

The VP will oversee all aspects of human resources including people strategy, organizational effectiveness, leadership development, compliance, risk management, talent acquisition, compensation, benefits, and employee engagement. This role requires a thoughtful and proactive leader who can balance strategic vision with hands-on execution, ensuring the best people practices that foster a culture of collaboration, inclusion, and excellence.

Responsibilities

  • Strategic leadership: Collaborate with senior leaders to build a culture rooted in trust, inclusion, retention, and high performance.
  • People Strategy: Develop and implement an integrated People Strategy encompassing leadership development, policies and processes, talent management and acquisition, compensation and evaluation, team member engagement, and equity.
  • HR Operations & Compliance: Ensure excellence in HR administration, payroll, compensation, benefits, and compliance with federal and state employment laws.
  • Talent Acquisition: Lead a fair, efficient, and inclusive recruitment process to attract and retain top talent aligned with our mission.
  • Leadership Development: Drive continuous learning and growth through management training, performance coaching, and succession planning.
  • Employee Engagement & Communication: Coordinate initiatives such as All-Team Meetings, Employee Roundtables, and communication strategies that strengthen internal connection and transparency.
  • Compensation & Benefits: Drive a market-informed approach to compensation and oversee health and welfare benefits planning, open enrollment, and vendor relationships.
  • Diversity and Inclusion: Champion inclusive initiatives, ensuring they are embedded in our organizational culture and practices.
  • Data-Driven Insights: Use HR data, analytics, and storytelling to evaluate outcomes, uncover trends, and guide strategy.
  • Partnership & Collaboration: Partner with Habitat for Humanity International (HFHI) and other key stakeholders to advance HR initiatives and measure organizational impact.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in human resources, business administration, or related field (or equivalent experience).
  • 5+ years of progressive HR leadership experience, ideally in a nonprofit or mission-driven organization with multiple locations.
  • Experience supervising a team.
  • Strong understanding of federal and state employment regulations.
  • Excellent analytical, problem-solving, and organizational skills.
  • Exceptional communication and interpersonal skills with a proven ability to handle confidential information with integrity.
  • Familiarity with HRMS/HRIS systems (Paylocity experience a plus).
  • Bilingual (English/Spanish) is a plus.
