Harvesters, a regional food bank serving a 27-county area across northeastern Kansas and northwestern Missouri, is seeking a strategic finance leader and trusted advisor to serve as its Chief Financial Officer (CFO). Reporting directly to the President & Chief Executive Officer, the Chief Financial Officer (CFO) serves as Harvesters' senior financial leader and a strategic business partner to the CEO, Executive Leadership Team, and Board of Directors. As a member of the Executive Leadership Team, the CFO provides enterprise-wide leadership and oversight of financial strategy, operations, governance, compliance, risk management, and organizational sustainability. This role plays a critical part in shaping long-term organizational success by translating financial information into strategic insight, guiding decision-making, safeguarding organizational assets, and advancing Harvesters' mission and impact. This role is eligible for a hybrid work schedule (3 days in office, 2 days remote).

Responsibilities

Executive Leadership & Strategy

  • Serve as a strategic advisor to the President & CEO, Executive Leadership Team, and Board of Directors on financial matters and organizational priorities.
  • Lead enterprise-wide financial planning, forecasting, long-range financial strategy, and scenario modeling efforts.
  • Partner with organizational leaders to develop, evaluate, and execute strategic initiatives that support Harvesters' mission, vision, and long-term sustainability.
  • Assess strategic opportunities, capital investments, operational initiatives, and organizational risks, providing recommendations that support informed decision-making.
  • Ensure alignment of financial and operational resources with organizational goals and performance objectives.

 

Financial Operations, Stewardship & Risk Management

  • Provide executive oversight of budgeting, forecasting, financial reporting, treasury management, investments, cash management, and financial operations.
  • Monitor organizational financial performance and advise leadership regarding trends, risks, opportunities, and corrective actions.
  • Ensure the integrity, accuracy, and transparency of financial information and reporting.
  • Maintain strong internal controls, risk management practices, and systems of financial accountability.
  • Promote responsible stewardship of organizational resources and long-term financial sustainability.

 

Audit, Compliance & Governance

  • Serve as the executive leader responsible for financial governance, compliance, fiduciary oversight, and regulatory reporting.
  • Direct all external audits, financial reviews, and compliance activities while serving as the primary liaison with auditors, financial institutions, investment advisors, tax professionals, and regulatory agencies.
  • Ensure timely and accurate completion of Form 990 filings and all required federal, state, local, retirement plan, tax, and regulatory reporting obligations.
  • Monitor evolving accounting standards and nonprofit regulations and recommend appropriate organizational responses.
  • Support the Board of Directors, Finance Committee, and Audit Committee through strategic reporting, financial analysis, governance support, and actionable recommendations.
  • Present financial performance, forecasts, risks, strategic opportunities, and recommendations to the Board and Board Committees.

Organizational Leadership & Talent Development

  • Provide executive leadership to the Finance function, including oversight of the Director of Finance and finance team members.
  • Establish departmental priorities, performance expectations, accountability measures, succession planning, and professional development strategies.
  • Build organizational financial literacy and strengthen accountability for resource stewardship across the organization.
  • Foster a culture of collaboration, innovation, continuous improvement, inclusion, and mission focus.
  • Lead change initiatives that enhance organizational effectiveness, operational efficiency, and decision-making.

 

Board & External Partnerships

  • Serve as the executive liaison to the Board of Directors and Finance and Audit Committees, providing strategic counsel and financial insight.
  • Cultivate and maintain productive relationships with donors, financial institutions, auditors, legal counsel, community partners, regulatory agencies, and other key stakeholders.
  • Represent Harvesters in financial and business matters with external partners, strengthening trust, transparency, and organizational credibility.

Qualifications

  • 10+ years of progressively responsible financial management and leadership experience required.
  • Demonstrated expertise in strategic financial planning, forecasting, compliance, risk management, organizational sustainability, and financial operations.
  • Proven experience partnering with executive leaders, governing boards, and external stakeholders to drive organizational success.
  • Exceptional leadership, communication, relationship-building, analytical, and strategic decision-making skills.
  • Experience presenting financial information and recommendations to boards, committees, and diverse stakeholder groups.
  • Strong knowledge of accounting principles, financial reporting, internal controls, governance, and regulatory compliance requirements.
  • Executive leadership experience within a nonprofit, mission-driven, distribution, healthcare, logistics, or similarly complex organization preferred.
  • Experience supporting governing boards and board committees preferred.
  • Experience with ERP systems, financial reporting tools, business intelligence platforms, technology systems, and data analytics preferred.
  • Food banking, food industry, member network, warehouse, supply chain, or related operational experience preferred.
  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, Business Administration, or a related field required.
  • Valid CPA credential highly preferred.
